2007 will be promoted as the `Year of India' in Italy-Go to Rome Campaign by CII

There is need for collaboration between financial institutions in India and Italy to guide small and medium enterprises in both countries to expand operations, according to the Italian Prime Minister, Mr Romano Prodi.

"Financial institutions such as banks must hand hold SMEs in setting up shop in each other's countries," he said at a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. He cited the example of how banks in Romania and Italy had collaborated to help SMEs expand to each other's countries. .....for more Further, he also said financial A consortium of seven large Italian banks recently created a € 300-million fund to support Italian SMEs in their expansion activities, he said. Agreeing that Italian SMEs were ignorant about Indian businesses, Mr Prodi said there was need to bridge the gap between their knowledge of `old India' and the present `new India'. "Our SMEs need to meet more Indian companies and get exposed to your way of operation and skills," he said.

At the same time, Indian companies too should look at Italy as a gateway to Europe. "We are giving a lot of priority to develop our sea ports," said Mr Prodi. Italian ports are an entry point to the Mediterranean and North African markets too. "Indian companies should look at the European Union as one large market of half a billion people and not as fragmented countries," he said. The CII, in a research document, has suggested setting up a joint Indo-Italian SME fund with a corpus of 1 million where 50 per cent of the funding would come from the two governments and the rest from international funding and private sector.

The CII President, Mr R. Seshasayee, the Italian delegation touring the country would look this proposal positively. "Italian SMEs are looking for joint ventures with Indian SMEs and need such a fund to back them. They should welcome this proposal," he said. 2007 will be promoted as the `Year of India' in Italy to facilitate trade and Mr Seshasayee said Indian industry too would reciprocate by a `Go Rome' campaign.

Go global, Sivathanu Pillai tells Indian companies

`Indian companies have remained merely manufacturers. But design holds the key. They should get into design development, at least at the component level, and compete in the international market.

It is high time Indian companies started entering the international defence products market, estimated at more than $9 billion a year, as the technologies are now indigenously available, said Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, the Chief Controller of the Defence Research Development Organisation and CEO of BrahMos. In the keynote address at an awards function organised by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) here on Thursday, Dr Pillai said that till now the defence research institutes had been developing the designs.

STRESS ON DESIGN-
"Indian companies - both in the public sector and the private sector - have remained merely manufacturers. But design holds the key. They should get into design development, at least at the component level, and compete in the international market," he said. He said there was a need for forming "consortium of public sector companies as well as private ones along with the research institutes to make a foray into the international market. We have made a beginning with BrahMos and there are many inquiries about it," he said.

COMPANIES FETED
Dr Pillai honoured 64 industries on the occasion for their contribution in developing products required for the Indian Navy, several of them based in Vizag and Hyderabad. Bharat Dynamics Ltd (Hyderabad), the manufacturer of lightweight torpedoes, Bharat Electronics Ltd (Bangalore), C-Dot (Trivandram), Tamil Nadu Telecommunications Ltd, Keltron, and ECIL (Hyderabad) were some of the prominent ones. Sri Panduranga Industries Ltd, a small company from Nuzvid (Krishna district), was also honoured for developing electronic console. Deepa Engineering Industries, Balagam Industries, Eagle Seals and Systems India Limited, Essen, Zenith Engineers, Sangamitra Engineering Associates, Stru-Fabs Heavy Equipment Fabricators, and Coromandel Electronics and Agencies were the local companies honoured by the NSTL on the occasion.

HELICOPTER FIRE
CONTROL SYSTEM
On the occasion, Dr Pillai also handed over documents for the helicopter fire control system for the advanced light helicopter to the General Manager of the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (Bangalore). The system, used for firing torpedoes from the helicopter, had been indigenously developed by the NSTL and it would only cost Rs 60 lakh against Rs 3 crore for the imported version.
Dr V. Bhujanga Rao, Director of NSTL, thanked the industry for its support over the past 38 years. NSTL has made impressive strides in developing stealth technology, crucial for underwater offence systems. Some of the technologies it developed has civilian applications such as typhoid detection kits, cochlear implants for improving hearing and sophisticated sensors.

Funds disposal at SIDBI `swift'

`Swift In Disposal Beyond Imagination' is the new avatar of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and funds up to Rs 50 lakh are disposed within a week's time by the administration without recourse to an early legal processing.
The increase in the outstanding from Tamil Nadu region from Rs 890 crore to Rs 1,245 crore in a short span is reflective of the change that the organisation has undergone in its mindset in facilitating growth, observed Mr A.R. Muralidharan, General Manager, SIDBI, Chennai.

With credit guarantee scheme in place for small-scale industries, there is no need to fear funding the small units. More so, with the provision to be raised from 75 per cent to 80 per cent, Mr Muralidharan said while delivering the keynote address at the `One Day Awareness Programme on Cluster Intervention' organised by Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) in association with Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) and SIDBI, Chennai, here on Tuesday.

Cluster approach works ... A sum of Rs 1.15 crore was disbursed recently for a powerloom cluster consisting of 28 units at Kancheepuram. Cluster formation is the right approach in creating a brand and to survive in the competitive scenario for the small-scale units, he added.

Speaking earlier, the Director of SISI, Mr S. Sivagnanam, said cluster approach has helped in saving costs for small units, while enhancing their competitiveness and collective capability in responding to big orders. They cannot work in isolation in the present global market scenario, he pointed out.

Mr K.R. Gnanasambandan, Chairman, Cluster Development, Maditssia, in his address said efforts are on to establish clusters in rubber, food, pharma, plastics and textiles in the region.
